bosendorfer 290 opinion
So what do you think? I have owned a 290 for 3 years now, this has been my dream piano since I was 6. I drive a piece of junk car and eat at taco bell on a regular basis so I could buy my dream. Mystic aside this is one amazing piano. It gives you everything that's in your mind, soft, scary, delicate. The lows go down to 15 Hzs, 97 keys for transposing organ music. I have taken the sheet music holder off so I can pluck the strings while playing some music, its simple perfection. Experienced players will realize that this is one of the few pianos that can always deliver what they throw at it and more. Sure I'm in the hole financially for the next 10 years but this is not a materialistic purchase. If a note can move you to tears whether you play or not this is the piano for you.Mechanics?the tuning is stable even after moving to and from concerts. The touch is perfection; trills, hard hits and the delicate breath are all right on! This piano prefers alot of room but if that's not possible cover the room with foam to create a dead sound zone (Cheap eggshell works just as well as the professional stuff for 1/20 the cost). Bosendorfer's claim to fame is that this piano takes more time to build than any other in the world, over a year. Franz Lizst gave his thumbs up when they built a piano strong enough to withstand his piano concertos (Lizst would break the strings on 2-3 pianos in a night. They would have a couple extra backstage to swap out during movements). The attention to detail and perfection reveals itself when the first note is played. I have played on alot of pianos and have yet to find one that comes close. The only one I can think of that is a joy to play even after playing the Bosendorfer right beside it is the Grotrain (German). All said its your ear and the feelings that follow that will ultimately decide what is right for you. This just happens to be mine Happy playing!Recommended:Yes

Finally! An Imperial!! Bosendorfer
I finally got the chance to play a special edition Bosendorfer Imperial at the recent NAMM conference in Anaheim, CA. Of the pianos produced today, this was definitely one of the most ornate I've played with a beautiful finish in gold and pearl and intricate wood carvings. I sat down at the 97 keys to find myself at first feeling poorly alligned. Yes, the nine extra keys in the bass are all black in color to help you keep yourself centered, but it still took some getting used to. You no longer sit in the center but slightly right. The tone is truly fantastic with a resonance that lasts seemingly forever. The extra soundboard area and sympathetic vibrations of the extra bass notes give the piano this unique quality. You can literally see and count the vibrations of the lowest C on the Imperial. It is quite amazing, but I've also read that these extra notes are nearly impossible to tune properly. All Bosendorfers in general, with this one being no exception, have a very mellow tone. Despite the unbelievable size, the sound is very intimate and perfect for Haydn, Mozart, most Beethoven, and even Debussy. Composers such as Rachmaninoff or Liszt are still better off played on a Steinway Model D. The action is excellent. It had a medium resistance and great repetition. Overall, this is a great piano, but I don't think it excels in all types of music. Nevertheless, the music it does excel in, it plays beautifully--Mozart can never sound better on any other piano. Still, I would take a perfectly built and cared for Hamburg Steinway D over it.Recommended:Yes

In commemoration of Steinway & Sons, Japan's 10th anniversary, Steinway has commissioned the first Art Case Piano to come from Asia: "Oto no Kawa," or "River of Sound," created by Japanese artist Chiharu Nishizawa. Based on a Hamburg O-180 grand piano, this instrument is a unique work of art, blending the vision of one of the rising stars of the Japanese art world with the beauty of a Steinway.
Nishizawa describes his work as follows: "...as I was studying Steinway's pianos, I came to feel that their unique form has something in common with classic Japanese art. The people painted on the piano, as on a picture scroll, seem to become aware of the stream of water (akin to the stream of music) painted on the upper side as they progress clockwise, gradually gaining imagination, vitality and serenity from the stream."

Furniture designer, Terrance Hunt, collaborated in the design of the Model O “The Julianne” piano.
The case is constructed of African mahogany enhanced to suggest a Chris-Craft type color and coated in a high-sheen polyester resin reminiscent of the lacquer finish of a wooden speedboat. The mahogany is inlaid in the fashion of such a craft, and the lid in particular resembles the decking one would expect to see. The music desk has a clever windshield look and actually folds down as the screen on a wooden runabout would.

Steinway High Society Grand Piano
This remarkable instrument is an identical re-creation of the piano Cole Porter played in his Waldorf Astoria residence, and on which he wrote many of his best loved songs. Skillfully re-created by Steinway master craftsmen in figured mahogany, the design features double Empire-style legs, intricate hand-carvings and decorative paintings to beautifully embody the passion and creative spirit of this great American composer. Mr. Porter?s original Steinway was created in 1907, and today distinguishes the lobby of the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.

Steinway Grove Park Grand Piano
There is a delicate and deliberate balance of both architectural and furniture design elements that are incorporated into the overall theme of Grove Park. The striking figure of American Quarter sawn White Oak veneers is used throughout this unique design. The lid of the piano has a fine ebonized stringing inlaid around its perimeter as well as a geometric quadrant of inlaid Malachite, a natural stone material with a greenish hue, at the front corners of the lid. This same Malachite motif is repeated at the upper portion of each leg and once again on the bench. All of the hardware is finished in an antique bronze, which contrasts with the mellow golden oak.
